ELECTRICITY GOES GREEN

Into the future with more renewable energy: BASF's solar park at the Industrial Park Lausitz will be the world's first PV plant on a power plant scale in 2022. The project was achieved with partner enviaM, for which a separate joint venture was founded. The plant covers around ten percent of the production site's current electricity requirements on an annual average.

Project description

Energy transition in the chemical industry

With the solar park, BASF and enviaM are demonstrating how the energy transition in the chemical industry can succeed. Green energy at competitive prices is the key to climate-neutral, sustainable industrial production and thus also to value creation and employment in Lusatia.

The majority of the electricity generated will be used to supply the Industrial Park Lausitz under a long-term electricity supply contract. In addition to the modernisation of BASF's own gas and steam turbine power plant, the supply of renewable energies represents an important step towards reducing the CO2 footprint of the Industrial Park Lausitz.

The joint solar park stands for the structural change in the region. As an energy location, Lusatia is no longer the land of lignite, but also the land of renewable energies.

Facts and figures

The solar park covers an area of 24 hectares and consists of around 52,000 photovoltaic modules and an adjacent transformer station. The total installed capacity amounts to 24 megawatts peak (MWp) and an expected electricity production of 25 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year.

The investment sum for the solar park and the associated transformer station amounts to around 13 million euros. The project was implemented without public funding.

About enviaM

The enviaM Group is the leading regional energy service provider in eastern Germany. The group of companies supplies almost 1.3 million customers with electricity, gas, heat and energy services. The group of companies employs around 3,300 people and includes envia Mitteldeutsche Energie AG (enviaM), Chemnitz, as well as other companies in which enviaM holds a majority stake. Together they are developing the Internet of Energy in eastern Germany. The majority shareholders of enviaM are E.ON SE and around 650 eastern German municipalities. The shareholders are involved in enviaM both directly and indirectly via associated companies. BASF holds a 51 percent stake and enviaM a 49 percent stake in the joint venture BASF enviaM Solarpark Schwarzheide GmbH, which was founded specifically for this purpose.

The next steps

The increased use of renewable energies is part of the strategy to establish a future-proof, competitive and ecological energy supply for the Industrial Park Lausitz. At the site, in the immediate vicinity of the solar park, stationary battery storage systems are being piloted on a large scale and innovative driving and operating methods are being tested with the sodium-sulphur battery storage system. With the development of former spoil tips, which are to be used to generate electricity from renewable energies in the future, another project is being planned that can cover a large part of the electricity consumption of the Lusatian production site. The municipality of Schipkau passed a planning resolution for this at the beginning of July 2025.

Industry needs a diversified supply more than ever. Direct access to renewable energies means a locational advantage that is also important for the further development of the Lusatia region. With the joint solar park, we are not only taking a big step forward here, but also with regard to climate protection targets.
